Dr. Stella Elkabes obtained a B.S. degree from Bogazici (Bosphorous) University, Istanbul, Turkey and M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees from the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. She performed her postdoctoral studies in the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD and Cornell University Medical College, NY, NY.
Dr. Elkabes’ research focuses on molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration, neuroprotection and regeneration in central nervous system inflammation and injury. The cross talk between glia and neurons and the contribution of the innate and adaptive immune responses to neurorepair are studied by use of animal models of multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury. The Elkabes laboratory also investigates the mechanisms of cerebellar pathology in an animal model of ataxia.
The laboratory employs a wide range of molecular and cellular techniques, in vitro and in vivo approaches and genetically modified mice.
